A common retort from creationists is that in schools controlled by them, science exam results are at least normal or above average. They argue that this would suggest that they are not interfering in the teaching of science in their schools. This is often issued as a sort of challenge to their detractors:
“If we are teaching creationism, how come our exam results are so good?”.
Firstly, the term, “science” covers many disciplines in which creationism is largely irrelevant, for example physics & chemistry. Moreover, even in those areas such as biology & astronomy where there is disagreement, it is limited to very specific areas. Creationists are also constrained by the National Curriculum which they are required to teach & which require specific science based (as opposed to creationist based) answers to questions.
Additionally, any effect would be masked by the wide variation in results, not only between schools but also within individual schools where there can be significant variations on an annual basis. There would simply be no way of pinpointing if a fall was due to teaching creationism or other effects.
Given all of this, it is therefore hardly surprising that evidence of interference in the education of British schoolchildren cannot be determined from exam results. That however does not prove that interference is not going on & you only have to look at the many remarks made by creationists in the state educational system to appreciate their gross misunderstanding of many modern scientific ideas. Misunderstandings that the evidence clearly indicates, they are absolutely intent on proselytising to other people’s children.
