I have read Jason's, “contribution” & disagree with most of it. Let me try & explain:

Let's assume that North Koreans decided that it would be nice if America shared their vision of communist utopia and made plans to spread the word to them. Of course, this is easier said than done, America has a long history of opposition to communism & any NK commies going anywhere near the White House would find life pretty unpleasant.

Therefore, instead they come up with sneaky plan to infiltrate the American educational system, overwhelming it with books, videos, DVDs & magazines, all glorifying communism & plastered with pictures of hammer & sickles.

Their central message is this.

1 – Communism is good. 2 – Capitalism is bad.

Which goes down like a ton of bricks. The parents complain, the issue ends up in court & the courts kick the communists out of the schools.

Let's call that plan A.

So the communists go away, lick their wounds, scratch their heads & come up with plan B:

1 – Socialism is good. 2 – Capitalism isn't really good.

But yet again their plan is rejected. Everyone is saying, “they're calling themselves socialists this time, but we all know its just them communists again.”

So in desperation the communists go away for another head scratching session & come to the conclusion that any association with anything remotely communist or anything too overtly critical of capitalism is dangerous. Hence plan C.

1 – Schools should encourage critical thinking skills by thinking critically about, (but not limited to) capitalism, American imperialism & the American nuclear arsenal.

In this example, it is obvious that the people calling for these changes in schools have absolutely no interest in critical thinking issues whatsoever. Its nothing more than a canard to force the tenets of an otherwise discredited political ideology into the public sphere, in such a way, that although it may be not promoting that ideology explicitly, is however implicitly promoting it by snidely denigrating its chief rival.

Now, surely the correct response to this sort of activity, in fact the only morally correct response to it, is not to start writing flowery blog entries in appreciation of the communists phony concern for educational standards (which they are actually damaging), but to totally reject such deceit altogether. After all, who would really condone such activity – other than a communist?

And it is the same with the creationists in America today. The breadcrumb trail linking what is happening in Louisiana at the moment & the previous activities of of creationists in America shows beyond any shadow of a doubt that the people behind this bill are motivated not by some higher concern for academic standards but by their fundamentalist religious beliefs, which they are selfishly attempting to push onto other people's children. The only people who would applaud such behaviour either haven't taken the time to fully inform themselves of the issues involved or are otherwise simply creationists playing games.

Although scientists may disagree over the details of evolution, they most certainly do not disagree over the central premises of evolution. It is not thought to be a controversial subject worthy of singling out for special attention & it is totally wrong to expose children to the religiously motivated criticisms aimed at it by creationists. Have Americans really forgotten about Dover already?
